Agadir Airport to Taghazout & Imsouane: N1 Coastal Road & Surf Guide
Updated · 6 min · Direct Moroccan Fleet Advice
Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) is the international gateway to Africa's premier wave zone: the world-renowned Atlantic surf coastline stretching through Aourir (Banana Village), Taghazout Bay, Tamraght, and the legendary right-hand point break of Imsouane. Renting a car directly at AGA terminal gives you the freedom to chase Atlantic swells, transport surfboards, and explore remote coastal cliffs on your own schedule.
1. The Northern Bypass Route from Agadir Airport (AGA)
Agadir Airport is situated 25 km southeast of Agadir city near Ait Melloul. To reach Taghazout without getting trapped in downtown beach traffic, follow this local routing:
- Exit AGA Terminal: Take the dual-carriageway N8 towards Agadir.
- Take the Voie Express / Ring Road Bypass: At the major roundabout before Agadir city, follow the green highway signs for Essaouira / Taghazout (N1). This bypass road skirts around the industrial and city districts, dropping you directly onto the coastal N1 highway north of the port.
- Drive Time to Taghazout: Approximately 45 to 55 minutes (48 km) from terminal doors to Taghazout village.
2. Driving the Scenic N1 Coast: Surf Spots & Villages
The N1 north of Agadir hugs the Atlantic ocean with breathtaking panoramic views:
- Aourir (Banana Village): Known for roadside fruit stalls selling sweet local bananas and mint tea. Gentle beach breaks at Banana Beach and Spiders.
- Tamraght & Taghazout Bay: World-class surf breaks including Devil's Rock, Crocro, Hash Point, Anchor Point (Pointe des Ancres), and Panorama. Modern eco-resorts, surf camps, and seaside cafes with designated parking areas.
- Anchor Point Parking: The dirt parking plateau above Anchor Point fills during winter swells. Arrive early for dawn patrol sessions; standard guardian fee is 5-10 MAD.
3. Continuing North to Imsouane (90 km from AGA)
Imsouane boasts the longest rideable wave in Africa (the famous "Magic Bay"). Continuing north along the N1 takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes from Taghazout:
- Road Quality: The N1 highway between Taghazout and Tamri is completely paved and widened. Watch for occasional argan goats and camels along the roadside.
- The Imsouane Descent: Turn off the N1 onto the winding scenic descent toward Imsouane bay. Drive slowly around hairpin turns to enjoy the 300-meter cliffside ocean panoramic vista.
- Fuel Up in Tamri: Tamri has the last reliable Afriquia service station before reaching Imsouane. Always keep at least half a tank of fuel.
4. Carrying Surfboards & Beach Gear
Transporting surfboards is straightforward with Etsycars fleet models:
- Shortboards & Funboards (Under 7'2"): Both our Dacia Sandero and Renault Clio 5 feature 60/40 folding rear seats. Two shortboard surf bags slide effortlessly diagonally from the boot through the passenger cabin.
